Ficus is a strong plant. In natural conditions, they might grow more than five hundred years. The indoor conditions for growing Ficus are completely different than in the nature. During our cultivation, the plants are partly prepared for this, but a few tips will give you more joy of Ficus.
Ficus can be put in a lit as well as in a semi-lit spot. Be sure that the plant is not put in direct sunlight during hot summer months. Once you have found a spot, it is advisable to keep the plant in place and not move it again. It takes a lot of energy from the plant to get used to a new location. If Ficus starts growing in one direction, you can of course easily change it, preferably by turning it a little.
The less-lit the location of the plant the more water it needs. The watering should be according to the habitat. It is also important to water the plant regularly and to make sure that the root boll remains soaked. During the winter rest period, give little tepid water to wet the root tips. In summer, the Indian rubber plant appreciates a rain shower. This also happens in the nature.
We advise the following amount per week:
Plant height Summer Winter
40 cm. - 100 cm. 160 ml. - 320 ml. 120 ml. - 200 ml.
> 100 cm. 480 ml. - 960 ml. 320 ml. - 640 ml.
To keep the plant strong and in good health, it is advisable to add nutrition for indoor plants to the water once in two weeks. Again, regularity is important!
After a year, Ficus has taken all nutrition from the pot soil. Therefore, Ficus will appreciate a new pot soil yearly. Re-pot in a larger pot. Packed pot soil for indoor plants is usable. To guarantee a thorough drainage you put a potsherd or equivalent at the bottom of the pot, turning the convex surface upwards. Larger plants (as of one meter) should only be re-potted every two or three years.
Attention: By re-potting, the plant will grow substantially.
Out-door, Ficus can sustain wind but indoors Ficus has difficulties with draught. Even more, it cannot stand it. Cold, but also warm airflows cause leaf fall and weaken young leaves. In a short time, your Ficus may look awful.
You can notice this in the young and soft-coloured leaves. Older leaves will fall. This is a natural process as this happens by most trees in autumn. Luckily, Ficus keeps on growing new leaves. Ficus’ smooth leaf surface should be dusted regularly. One can dust with a sponge, a rag or a cotton pad.
Ficus Forever species Danielle®, Midnight Lady®, Samantha®, Golden Monique®, Twilight® en Anastasia® are also fit for your balcony or terrace. As soon as the temperature stays above 16°C, these species can be put outside. Be sure they are put out of the wind, severe sun and the pot soil is sufficiently wet. Thus you will have more joy of your outdoor Ficus.
Scientific research shows that Ficus makes a positive contribution to the environment. Ficus purifies the air we live and work in. Ficus can be a cure for the Sick Building Syndrome, working or living in an enclosed environment with no ventilation.
